WHY COMPASS ROUTE
With over a decade inside the regulatory system, we know what agencies expect — and how inspectors apply the standards.
The R.E.A.D.Y.™ methodology ensures every engagement follows a clear, structured path from requirements to results.
We don't hand you a report and walk away. We help you develop procedures and practices that stay with your operation.
Restaurants operate differently than schools. Schools differently than hospitals. Our guidance reflects your industry's reality.
ABOUT US
Compass Route Consulting was founded on a simple belief: operators shouldn't have to navigate food service regulations alone. We bring the map, the experience, and the clarity to guide you through.
Founded after more than a decade working inside the Environmental Health regulatory system, we have sat on both sides of the inspection table — and that experience is what makes our work different.
Our work is grounded in the R.E.A.D.Y.™ framework — a structured approach to help operators understand requirements, evaluate current practices, address gaps, develop systems, and chart a clear path forward.
With deep knowledge of what agencies expect, what operators struggle with, and how to bridge that gap — we are the partner you want in your corner before, during, and after the inspection.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Working With Us
We help food service and hospitality operators navigate the regulatory and operational side of their business — from getting a brand new restaurant permitted and approved, to ensuring your facility meets health code requirements, to providing ongoing compliance and operational support. Think of us as your expert guide through the regulatory process that most operators have never done before.
Who do you work with?
We work with a wide range of food service and hospitality operators, including independent restaurants and bars, food trucks and ghost kitchens, hotels and resorts, corporate and institutional dining (universities, healthcare, senior living), catering operations, and emerging concepts launching for the first time.
Are your services available outside of my city or state?
Yes — Compass Route Consulting serves operators nationwide. Most services are available virtually, including plan reviews, application support, health department liaison, and consulting sessions. When an on-site visit is needed, we travel to you.
Services & Pricing
Every engagement is scoped individually based on the type of facility, square footage, and complexity of your project. After an intro call, we put together a flat-rate proposal so you know exactly what to expect before work begins.
Do you offer ongoing support?
Yes. Our Advisory Retainer provides ongoing consulting on a monthly basis covering regulatory compliance, health code adherence, inspection readiness, and operational standards. Retainers are scoped based on the number of locations and depth of involvement, with a minimum 3-month commitment.
The Process
What does the consulting process look like?
Every engagement starts with an introduction call where we learn about your operation and what you need. From there, we put together a scoped proposal outlining exactly what we'll do, what you'll receive, and what it costs. Once you're ready to move forward, we get to work. You'll receive written reports, action plans, and follow-up support at every stage.
Do you offer virtual consultations?
Yes. Most of our services are available virtually, including plan reviews, application support, health department liaison, and pre-inspection preparation. Virtual consultations are available to operators nationwide, so no matter where you're located, we can get to work quickly.
How long does a consulting project typically take?
It depends on the scope. Some engagements can be completed in a matter of days. A full New Concept Launch & Permitting engagement — from initial application review through final construction walkthrough — can take several weeks to a few months depending on how quickly your local health department moves.
What information should I have before our first meeting?
The more context you can bring, the better — but don't worry if you're still in the early stages. Helpful information includes your concept type, your menu or menu ideas, your facility size or planned square footage, your location, and any correspondence you've already had with your local health department. If you have architectural plans, bring those too. If you don't have any of this yet, that's okay — we'll help you figure out where to start.
Why do I need help with the permitting process?
Most operators go through this process once. We've done it dozens of times. A single missed detail — an incorrect menu item, an equipment placement issue, a missing plan note — can delay your approval by weeks. We know exactly what health departments are looking for and how to communicate with them effectively, so you can focus on building your business.
Do you work directly with the health department on my behalf?
Yes. We receive their feedback and make sure your responses are complete and correct so the approval process moves as fast as possible.
How long does the permitting process typically take?
It varies by jurisdiction, facility type, and how complete your initial submission is. A well-prepared application with a clean menu and accurate architectural plans will always move faster than one that requires multiple rounds of revision. Our goal is to get you as close to perfect as possible on the first submission.
Do you require a contract?
Yes. All engagements are covered by a signed Client Service Agreement before work begins. The agreement outlines the scope of work, timeline, deliverables, and payment terms so there are no surprises on either side. It protects you just as much as it protects us.
How do I get started?
Simple — visit compassrouteconsulting.com and schedule your introduction consultation call. We'll take the time to understand your situation and put together a proposal tailored to your needs. No pressure, no obligation to move forward.
Every engagement begins with a conversation. Let's talk about your operation.
